The first stage (1966~1980) In 1966, Dorr oliver company in the United States firstly used MBR for wastewater treatment research in 1968, Smith et al. used ultrafiltration to replace the secondary tanks in the activated sludge process. in the 1970s, the membrane bioreactor process entered the Japanese market for the first time. The second phase (1980 ~ 1995) In 1989, the Japanese government government joined with many large companies to invest in R&D. In the 1990s, Kubota developed a flat plate submerged MBR. in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Zenon Environmental developed two registered products successfully. zenon environmental’s commercialized product system – -ZenonGem entered the market in 1982. Phase III (1995 to present) Mid to late 1990s. More and more European countries are using MBR for domestic and industrial wastewater treatment. Currently there are four major companies operating MBRs, namely Zenon Canada, Mitsubishi Rayon, Suez LDE/IDI France and Kubota Japan.
